A Customer’s Guide to Buying Hurricane Impact Windows

A Customer’s Guide to Buying Hurricane Impact Windows

From its diverse population, famed theme parks, breathtaking beaches, delectable food, to the sunny weather, there comes an array of reasons why many dream of living in Florida. Although these may all be true, the fact that the country has endured its huge share of hurricanes over the years still makes it a dangerous place to live without proper preparation.

If you’re a new resident to this famed tropical state, chances are you’re planning to install calamity-ready equipment, such as hurricane impact windows, in your new home before a strong tropical storm brews your location.

Homeowners’ Buying Guide for Hurricane Impact Windows

To help you find the right hurricane impact windows to buy, here is a brief guide on what you should not miss to check out.

Read on.

  • Know the materials for your frames

Since the demand for impact windows continues to grow in hurricane-prone areas such as Florida, many variations of the product have already been produced using different materials. Generally, there are 3 main options for impact window frames: Aluminum, vinyl, and wood. If you want to get an aluminum one, expect that it will be lightweight, durable, weather-resistant, and even low maintenance. Meanwhile, vinyl hurricane impact windows are excellent insulators and can be bought at an affordable price. Opting to have a wood, on the other hand, promises high energy performance but will need additional attention and is high maintenance.

  • Know the types of glass

Aside from the materials used, it is also important to know the different glass options when buying hurricane-resistant windows for your home in Florida.

Generally, there are 2 types of glasses that can be used when creating a hurricane impact window. The first one is a laminated glass. It is made produced by sandwiching a plastic made of polyvinyl butyral in between two sheets of glass. Among its perks include shielding your home from 99 percent of UV radiation and if broken, the glass will not shatter outwards; instead, the shards of laminated glass will adhere to the interlayer.

The second one is called the insulated laminated glass. Compared to the first type, this one is composed of multiple layers of glass panes that are sealed together. One advantage of this type is that it was designed to minimize heat or cold transfer, thus promising energy efficiency in your home by preventing your air-conditioned or heated air to leak through the window.

Why Impact Windows?

To give you a brief background, here are a few benefits hurricane impact windows promise:

  • Increased security against intruders – Since impact windows are manufactured to have several sheets of glass, this gives your home additional layers of security from burglars attempting to break into your property.
  • Sound reduction – In addition to protecting your home, impact windows also help shield your interior from the noisy world outside your doors.
  • One-time installment – Tired of having to install storm shutters just days before hurricanes make their landfall? Fortunately, with impact windows, you can now enjoy a safer, sturdier, and hurricane-ready structure all-year long.

Reduce property damage and ensure your family’s safety with the help of premium hurricane impact windows.
