THE IMPORTANCE OF HURRICANE IMPACT WINDOWS FOR COASTAL CITIES IN FLORIDA

Although the annual hurricane season might be the norm for most Floridians, it doesn’t mean it should be taken lightly. We are all familiar with the damage that a particularly intense storm can cause, and it is important that living in cities susceptible to storm impact, you protect yourself and your property. Hurricane impact windows are a key feature for coastal cities in Florida, the Florida Building Code requires that all windows within one mile of the coast be impact-resistant or protected. However, you should not be limiting yourselves to one mile to protect your house, as hurricanes have a widespread impact and it can destroy property nearer or further away from the coastline. To highlight the importance of hurricane impact windows in Florida, we have prepared a few reasons that may put things in perspective.

Reasons to Invest in Hurricane Impact Windows

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the primary culprit of damage due to the storm is caused by windows and doors. During a storm, the debris is picked up along with the fast and intense winds creates a potential hazard to homes. Standard windows are susceptible to breakage and can, in turn, allow the debris, wind, and rain to enter your home, wreaking havoc as shattered glass and objects picked up will damage your interior of the house, and the lack of protection from the windows combined with increased pressure from the storm can cause exterior damage as well. Broken windows give flooding an opportunity, broken trees and branches have a way of entering your home, it is a recipe for disaster. Hurricane impact windows are designed to withstand the heavy rains and winds as well as protect your property from the debris that can cause damage to both the interior and exterior of the house.

Investing in hurricane impact windows will not only protect your property from the potential damages of a storm, but also decrease your bills, and not just the post-hurricane repair ones. Storm impact windows offer an insulating effect that will be able to keep the cold air out during the winter and the warm air out during the summer, the latter being especially important in Floridian coastal cities. This may in turn reduce your energy bills. Additionally, some home insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners that are going the extra mile to protect their property from the storm. The cost of owning a coastal property is high enough without adding the extremely high insurance premiums to it, by installing hurricane impact windows in coastal cities in Florida, you are potentially mitigating your home insurance costs along with protecting yourself from a force that has become part of Florida living.

There are plenty of other reasons to consider installing impact windows in your current or future Florida properties, soundproofing and safety are additional ones to consider, but the most important of all is to protect yourself and your property from the hurricanes. Repairs can get quite expensive and storms can cause a great deal of anxiety, especially since they seasonal in Florida. Take the extra steps to protect yourself and reduce your homeowner’s anxiety by installing hurricane impact windows in your house.
